Due to changing rules and regulations regarding emissions, in the 1970’s Corvette was forced to alter their engines to run cleaner. It was at this time that the LT1 engine was developed and placed into the C3 stingray. The LT1 produced similar power to the older big blocks but was designed to be a much higher revving and lighter engine. This meant these LT1 cars had much better handling characteristics and overall driving feel. The LT1 is a 350 cu in V8 engine that delivers 330 hp at 5600 rpm with a 9.0:1 compression ratio. Although these cars don’t have the raw power of the big block motors, they shaved roughly 200lbs of engine weight over the nose of the car and ran much more efficiently which meant that all of the speed they lost in power, they gained back in intangible performance. This engine was so beloved that it was used in all of only eight ZR1s built in 1971.

 

This 1971 LT1 is finished in Classic White and left the factory with plenty of options which can be seen listed below. One highlight is the factory optional four-speed close ratio heavy duty transmission (RPO M21). Along with the car is a copy of the original tank sticker, original owners manual, and documentation dating back to 2008. The car ran great prior, but just to be meticulous, in 2013 the car underwent an engine out rebuild, received Bilstein suspension, and a Dewitt aluminum radiator to help insure the car runs cool.

 

On the road, this car is very in tune. The engine stays cool on warmer days and the power is much smoother and more linear than the big blocks we have experienced. In other words, this car bogs less, runs smoother, is more drivable, but still delivers the cool factor of a classic sports car. This car has been tremendously cared for and maintained and is surely one of the best drivers in the collection.
